Charles Schaefer

Charles J. Schaefer, 73, of 6 East Alford St. died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 30, 1928, son of Jacob and Catherine Zawasky Schaefer, he attended schools there. After school, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served as an aviation machinists mate third class from 1945 until 1947. He was employed as a union sheet metal worker for Local 28 in New York City for 40 years, retiring in 1990. He moved to Pittsfield from Westchester County, N.Y., five years ago. Mr. Schaefer was a member of the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsfield. He leaves his wife, the former Dorothy Herbst, whom he married March 27, 1949; two sons, Warren Schaefer of Elliott City, Md., and Gary Schaefer of Pittsfield; a daughter, Karen Loving of Richmond, Va.; a brother, William Schaefer of New York City, and two grandsons. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Harold Hoeppner, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield will be Friday from 7 to 9. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church.
