Alice E. Dewkett

Alice E. "Effie" Dewkett, 81, of South Main Street died yesterday at home. Born in Stephentown, N.Y., on Nov. 15, 1919, daughter of Donald and Alice Goold Sleighter, she attended schools there and in Millerton, N.Y., Pittsfield and South Egremont as her father traveled to various jobs. In later years, she was employed by the former Oakwood Inn in Great Barrington, Becton-Dickinson in Canaan, Conn., and the Community Shop on Castle Street in Great Barrington. She retired in 1987. Mrs. Dewkett was a member of the First Congregational Church. She had been active in the Great Barrington Senior Center since her retirement and had been in charge of sewing, crafts and other activities. She also helped with blood pressure and health clinics. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, embroidery and country/western music. Her husband, Edgar Allen Dewkett, whom she married Feb. 1, 1941, in North Egremont, died in 1961. She leaves a daughter, Shirley Drumm of Great Barrington; a son, David Dewkett of Crescent City, Fla.; a brother, Donald Sleighter of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and six grandchildren. A son, Jene Monroe Dewkett, died in 1959. Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 14, at 11 at the FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, conducted by the Rev. Charles Van Ausdall, pastor of the First Congregational Church. Burial will follow in the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 13, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
