John D. Nielsen, 87, died Sunday morning at Fairview Hospital. Born in Pittsfield on May 24, 1913, son of George D. and Mary Dunn Nielsen, he was a 1930 graduate of the former Searles High School. Mr. Nielsen served in the Army during World War II. He had resided in Great Barrington most of his life and worked as a horse trainer. He moved around to various horse racing tracks. His wife, the former Melvine Hess, died in 1987. He leaves several nieces and nephews. Mr. Nielsen is survived by several nieces and nephews, Jane Whalen of Lee, Sandra L. LeProvost of Lee, Barbara A. Salinetti of Lee, Muriel R. Chisholm of Lee, Ann Gurney of Great Barrington, John J. Broderick of Great Barrington, Mary Kvocka of Queensbury, N.Y., and Patrick Broderick of Great Barrington. Two sisters, Mary "Babe" Seff and Barbara Broderick, died in 1991 and 1996, respectively. A memorial service will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 3, at noon from St. Mary's Church in Lee. KELLY FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
