Ray J. Cuevas Sr.

Ray J. Cuevas Sr., 74, of Theresa Terrace died yesterday morning at home. Born in Laurel, Miss., on Feb. 19, 1927, son of Louis and Elizabeth Murray Cuevas, he attended schools there, including Pass Christian High School. He moved to Lee in August 1967. He served in the Navy during World War II and received the Purple Heart when his ship, the USS DuPage, was torpedoed in the Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines. He also was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring in 1967 after 25 years of service. Mr. Cuevas was employed by the former Bell & Howell Corp. in Albany, N.Y., from 1967 until 1973. He then opened R&L Painting, which he owned and operated until retiring in 1991. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of the Bossidy Crerar Post 893 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of the Tri-Town Bowling League and the Fleet Reserve. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf. He leaves his wife, the former Lola Scanzillo, whom he married Aug. 3, 1952; two sons, Ray Cuevas Jr. of Lenox and Vincent Cuevas of Herndon, Va.; a daughter, Sheryl Bercier of East Windsor, Conn., and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:15 from KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary's Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday evening from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Friends wishing may make donations to the Lee Regional Visiting Nurse Association or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
