Doris Fitzgerald

Doris M. Fitzgerald, 78, of 207 Francis Ave. died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on April 15, 1923, daughter of William V. and Mildred M. Garno Hook, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She was employed by General Electric Co. during World War II. A homemaker, she later worked as a clerk at the former Zayre Department Store, and had sold Avon products. She also worked for the Visiting Nurse Association of Pittsfield. A communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Mrs. Fitzgerald served as a Eucharistic minister, a member of the Parish Council, the Prayer Line and the choir. She was also active in the church bazaars and bake sales. A member of the Senior Center, she enjoyed baking, knitting, gardening and reading. Her husband, Thomas C. Fitzgerald, whom she married May 17, 1943, died July 29. She leaves four sons, William T. Fitzgerald of South Korea, Thomas C. Fitzgerald II of Spokane, Wash., Joseph M. Fitzgerald and James J. Fitzgerald, both of Pittsfield; a daughter, Mary E. Fitzgerald of Mansfield; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A daughter, Teresa M. Fitzgerald, died in 1991. She was also predeceased by two brothers, William Hook, late of Pittsfield, and John Hook, late of Lanesboro. Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 14, at 8:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church, with the Rev. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 8 at Dery Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association or to St. Joseph's Church in care of the Dery Funeral Home.
