Wahconah Wallops Chicopee Comp

DALTON, Mass. -- The top-seeded Wahconah football team downed Chicopee Comp, 48-19, on Friday night.
 
Ryan Washburn got things started for Wahconah in the first quarter after receiving a 41-yard touchdown pass from Nick Clayton. Wahconah missed the 2-point conversion but did not miss much the rest of the way.
 
With 4:10 remaining in the first quarter, Clayton carried the ball in from the 10-yard line for a touchdown. This time, the 2-point conversion attempt was good, putting Wahconah up, 14-0.
 
Wahconah’s defense was huge in the win; stopping Chicopee Comp on almost every play.
 
In the final minute of the first quarter Washburn ran for a 79-yard touchdown. Wahconah went into the second quarter with a 22-0 lead.
 
Wahconah scored on two plays in the second quarter: the first a 13-yard run from Quinn Ceaser and the second a 35-yard throw from Clayton to Washburn. Wahconah was up 34-0 at half.
 
Chicopee Comp finally got on the board in the second half. It first touchdown came with 2:09 remaining in the third quarter, putting the score at 34-6, but Wahconah’s Evan Garvey ran for a 77-yard touchdown on the return.
 
Chicopee Comp responded, adding one more to the board for in the final 20 seconds of the third quarter; putting them down 40-12.
 
With 4:37 remaining in the game Wahconah’s Matt Salvatore gave the home team its final touchdown; on the return Chicopee Comp’s Corey Heath added the final touchdown of the game leaving the score at 48-19.
 
Wahconah now advances to the championship game of the Division 4 Western Massachusetts Tournament, a rematch of last year's regional final in which it beat Agawam 20-0. On Friday, second-seeded Agawam advanced with a 28-6 win over South Hadley.
