McCann Tech Shuts Out Drury
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Mason Stred scored a pair of goals, and the McCann Tech boys soccer team Tuesday recorded its fourth consecutive clean sheet, beating Drury, 3-0.
The Hornets dominated Drury in all facets of the game. It was the early pressure fromMcCann Tech that put it in the driver’s seat early on.
Just 10 minutes into the game, Zach Howland had a nice run up the right sideline that he was able to cut in and get a good shot on net. Drury keeper made the initial save but couldn’t stop the back post finish as Mason Stred pounced on the rebound to give him his first goal of the night.
Mason Stred finished with a brace, scoring the third and final goal of the game.
“It’s a great turnaround from the first part of the season because we have been struggling to get the ball in the net,” McCann Tech Stephen McCallister said. “This is our fourth shutout, but our offense has been creating a ton of chances, but we’ve been unable to finish them. Coming to play Drury, these boys were amped, they were ready to play this game, and hopefully, we can move forward Friday and get a win against Hoosac at home.”
McCann Tech did a nice job using the width, especially down the right, where Howland had plenty of space to work. The Hornets went into the halftime break up 1-0.
The second half saw one of Drury’s best chances in the whole game when Jorge Bond sent a free kick that McCann keeper Ben Harris had to tip onto the bar. Drury was unable to finish the rebound and sent it over the bar.
Two minutes later in the 49th minute, Stred was able to intercept a back pass and go right in on goal, where his initial shot was saved. This time Howland was there to tap in the rebound at the back post. Drury struggled to clear their lines all game long, and McCann was ready to attack.
From that point on, McCann smelled blood and continued to put the pressure on Drury. Three minutes later, in the 52nd minute, Mason Stred found his second goal of the game on a 50/50 ball that Ashton Solomon won and was able to cross over for the finish. It seemed like McCann was in a different gear than Drury, and it showed on the scoreline.
“From last week to this week, there’s been a huge difference in our team,” McAllister said. “Our mentality has been great, and we’ve had a couple of team meetings to get the kids together to let them know that we have to work as a team and not just as individuals. This team is something special this year.”
Since McCann’s opening loss of the season, the Hornets (3-1-1) have rattled off three wins and a draw in hopes of keeping progressing as the season moves on. They will get their next chance for a win against Hoosac Valley on Friday. As for this young Drury side (0-6-1), they will host Pioneer Valley CICS in hopes of finding their first win of the season.
