Monument Mountain's Culbreth, Mount Greylock's Raymond Recognized
This week’s iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week stepped outside the county to test themselves against a different level of competition during the spring vacation week.
Monument Mountain’s Siddy Culbreth went all the way to Foxborough to compete in the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association’s Invitational.
Culbreth not only won the triple jump and placed second in the long jump, he set Berkshire County records in both events.
In his fifth of six attempts in the long jump, Culbreth went 23 feet, 1 inch to break a 2-year-old county mark. Then Culbreth nearly matched his own Berkshire standard with a mark of 23-0.25 in his final attempt.
In the triple, Culbreth went 48-8 on his first attempt of the day, breaking a county record in place since 1997.
His triple jump distance was the best this spring in the commonwealth at the time of the meet and in the top 30 in the nation so far this season.
As for the county records, Culbreth was able to keep them in the Spartan family. Monument Mountain alumni Otis Wilson and Oliver Berkowitz held the Berkshire marks in the triple jump and long jump, respectively.
Reese Raymond and the Mount Greylock girls lacrosse team took their first loss of the season this week, but the Division 4 Mounties did so in a 13-10 decision against the D2 West Springfield Terriers.
Raymond scored a team-high five goals in that road loss, maintaining a torrid scoring pace for the week.
In three games, Raymond scored 16 goals, including six in a bounceback win over Hampshire Regional on Friday.
Mount Greylock (7-1) has another busy week this week with three more games, starting Monday with a road trip to face Rutland, Vt.
The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Bedard Bros.
