This week’s iBerkshires.com/Adams Community Bank Athletes of the Week led their teams to the Western Massachusetts quarter-finals in two very different games.

One won in dominating fashion. The other had to climb out of a deep hole to earn a home win.

Monument Mount senior Noel Powell and the Spartans’ boys soccer team stormed into the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament with an 11-5-1 record and a No. 3 seed.

On Friday, Monument Mountain buried Franklin Tech in a 7-1 first-round win, and Powell led the way with two goals and two assists.

He has been leading the way for the Spartans all season, amassing 10 goals for a squad that has won four out of five games going into Monday afternoon’s sectional quarter-final against Berkshire County North Division rival Mount Greylock.

The Spartans split with the Mounties in the regular season. In their first meeting, Powell scored a goal in his team’s 2-1 win.

Pittsfield’s volleyball team earned the No. 6 seed in the Western Mass D2 tournament, where it was matched up against 11th-seeded Holyoke in the first round.

The squad from the Birthplace of Volleyball proved more than game in the first two games, winning, 25-14 and 25-16.

Behind more than 30 assists from senior captain Brennah Brickle, the Generals rallied to win the next three games and move on to Tuesday’s quarters at No. 3 Chicopee.

“We realized we were starting to get in our heads a little bit,” Brickle said of the Generals’ conversation between the second and third games. “And we were not having that, our senior year especially. So we just played for each other. We played for each other, and it turned out as a win.”
