Shove, Mongeon Named Athletes of the Week
As usual, the county's high school golfers got a jump on the rest of the area's student-athletes with a full week of matches pre-Labor Day Weekend.
And the first iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week of the 2026-27 school year hit the ground running -- or, in their sport, walking -- with strong performances in their openers.
Senior Zach Mongeon, a Drury High School student who plays on the cooperative team with Hoosac Valley, provided the season's first dramatic moment when he birdied the final hole at Forest Park Country Club to give the Hurricanes a one-stroke win over Lee on Opening Day.
Mongeon ended up missing out on medalist honors for the match by just one stroke with a 4-over round of 38, but making his final putt to put his team over the top more than made up for that.
Four days later, Mongeon turned in another strong performance, this time getting through the front nine at Wahconah Country Club in 5-over 40 to lead the Hurricanes in a match against Wahconah.
Last fall, Mongeon tied for fourth as an individual at the all-county Berkshire Classic at Taconic Golf Club and competed as an individual at the Division 3 Western Mass Championships.
He and the Hurricanes (1-1) will look to continue their quest to qualify as a team for this year's sectional on Tuesday, when they head to Pittsfield's Berkshire Hills Country Club to take on Taconic.
Lenox Memorial senior Katie Shove is a three-sport standout for the Millinoaires but this week called golf "one of her favorite sports."
And she showed why, helping Lenox to a 2-0 start with wins over Pittsfield and Taconic.
In the opener, Shove took medalist honors at the Country Club of Pittsfield with a 44 to edge teammate Oliver Kirby by a stroke.
On Thursday, she posted a 3-over-par round of 40 on Lenox's home course, losing the medal to Kirby by a stroke but helping the team improve to 2-0 with a win over Taconic.
Lenox will look to double its win total on Wednesday when it heads south to take on Mount Everett and Monument Mountain in a tri-match at Wyantenuck Country Club.
