Wahconah Upsets No. 2 Seed on the Road
LUDLOW, Mass. – Brooke Harrington scored a pair of goals Wednesday night to lead the seventh-seeded Wahconah girls soccer team to a 2-0, upset win over second-seeded Ludlow in the quarter-finals of the Western Massachusetts Class B Tournament.
Harrington started the scoring midway through the first half when she converted an assist from Ella Scalise.
“It was a great finish from Brooke and even better ball from Ella Scalise to keep the play alive,” Wahconah coach Maggie Rivers said.
“From there it was a battle. Goalkeeper Paetyn Tatro had several key stops. She was cool, calm, and collected coming off an injury today and led with poise the whole time. She caught everything clean and was a huge leader in the back. Paetyn had a huge stop on a PK too and then saved the deflection as well.”
Tatro finished with 18 saves to keep the clean sheet.
“Our defense was huge all night,” Rivers said. “Several key deflections from Mia Thomas and Gracey Farley. Chloe Difazio and Marissa Poirier were also key on defense with their physicality and playing balls out of the air. Total team effort. Best game they’ve played as a unit all year with Paetyn anchoring in the back.”
Harrington gave Wahconah an insurance goal with 14 minutes left when she scored from 30 yards out into the upper 90 off an assist from Gianna Heilbroun.
No. 7 Wahconah (11-4-2) moves on to face either South Hadley or Frontier in the regional semi-finals on a day to be announced.
South Hadley and Frontier play on Thursday evening.
