Mount Greylock Knocks Off Lenox in Five Sets
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Mount Greylock volleyball team Friday rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the match and a 7-3 deficit in the fifth set to earn a victory over previously unbeaten Lenox.
Olivia Perez had a triple-double, getting a team-high 21 kills to go with 15 assists and 12 digs in the 29-27, 22-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-9 win.
Kaleigh Jaros had a team-high 24 assists. Tyanna Lepicier led the defense with 24 digs and recorded seven kills while serving five aces.
Jillian DeChaine had four kills and a pair of aces, and Anna Garnish provided several long service runs, including in the pivotal fifth set.
Earlier this week, Mount Greylock coach Greg Geyer was commenting on how competitive Berkshire County volleyball is this fall, and his words came to fruition a few nights later.
The match started by going to “overtime” in the first set, which Mount Greylock won. Lenox came back and won the next two.
After a Mountie win to force the first-to-15 tie-breaker, Mount Greylock carried that momentum over to take a 3-0 lead.
This time, the Millionaires rallied, pulling ahead, 7-3.
But Mount Greylock outscored the visitors, 12-2, the rest of the way.
“These Mount Greylock student-athletes have been working extremely hard and learning the lessons our previous young teams also had to learn,” Geyer said. “The pace of growth on this team is a testament to their hard work. It was a really fun night and now we move on to tomorrow's practice and next week's matches."
Claire O'Brien led Lenox with 13 kills. Evelyn Julieano had 11 kills and a team-high seven aces. Leanna Maschino led the Millionaires with five blocks and put down 10 kills, and Grace Julieano directed Lenox's offense with 26 assists.
"We were thrown off at first by the amount of tips we were seeing, but quickly starting picking those up. Grace hustled all night and had some great tip coverage as well as her sets," Lenox coach Anna Nealon said. "Leanne played very smart, placing the ball in empty spots.
"The girls are disappointed but will use that energy to come out on top for their Senior Night match versus Wahconah."
The Mounties (6-5) Monday go to Drury.
Lenox (12-1), which came into the game as the sixth-ranked team in the commonwealth in Division 5, hosts Wahconah on Tuesday.
