Mount Greylock Girls, Boys Strong in Cross Country Opener

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. – Mount Greylock’s Brenna Lopez ran to victory in the girls field and led the Mounties to a pair of dual meet wins at the county’s season-opening cross country meet at Monument Mountain on Wednesday.
 
Lopez finished in 19 minutes, 30 seconds to finish 47 seconds ahead of runner-up Nora Schoeny of Lenox.
 
The Mounties and Millionaires split the top 10 finishes with Mount Greylock taking eight of the first 10 spots.
 
Lenox’s and Mount Greylock’s boys each went 2-0 in duals.
 
The Millionaires’ Ben Harwood won the boys race in 16:46.5, outkicking Mount Greylock’s Patrick Holland (16:50.8).
 
As in the girls’ race, the Mount Greylock and Lenox boys dominated the top of the leaderboard, splitting the top eight finishes.
 
Lee’s Noah Hassmer cracked the top 10, finishing eighth overall.
 
The Mount Everett boys won a pair of dual meets behind Nicolas Bruno and J. Hunter Jeffries, who finished 16th and 17th, respectively, as all eight of the county league’s teams got together for Opening Day.
 
The Pittsfield boys lost to the Eagles but picked up a pair of dual meet wins. Tyler Williams led the Generals with a 19th-place finish.
 
Pittsfield’s girls went 3-0, including the day’s closest result, a 28-29 win over host Monument Mountain.
 
The Generals were led by Margaret Hall and Chloe Potash, who were 16th and 17th, respectively. Nina Martin led the Spartans, finishing in 11th place, the first runner not from Lenox or Mount Greylock to cross the line in the girls race.
