FRANKLIN, Mass. -- Three days after the governor announced that Massachusetts’ schools will not open their doors for classes again this spring, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association officially canceled all spring sports and tournaments.

The MIAA board met Friday and made the expected announcement, calling the decision “difficult,” “disappointing,” and “disheartening.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the commonwealth in March, the MIAA was forced to cancel state finals in some winter sports and declare co-champions and has put forward alternative plans for an abbreviated spring sports season that could be implemented if schools reopened.

On Tuesday, Gov. Charlie Baker announced that they would not, and the state’s interscholastic sports governing body immediately organized a board meeting to take the next logical step.

“The ‘life lessons’ inherent in the games we play will be our resiliency to provide mental and physical strength to focus on the discipline and teamwork to make a difference in the challenging chapters in the Game of LIfe,” the MIAA wrote in a memo announcing the decision.
