SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The top-seeded South Hadley girls tennis team Monday earned a 5-0 win over Mount Greylock in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament semi-finals.

“It was a great year, and the girls improved tons and have a lot to be proud of their season,” Mount Greylock coach John Jacobbe said. “Although we lost, 5-0, we could have won this match 3-2, but we gained valuable experience playing in a Western Mass semifinal, and we will be returning seven of our eight varsity members.”

The Tigers’ Harley Werenski earned a 4-6, 7-5, 1-10 win over Mia Van Deurzen at first singles. And at second singles, Kaylin Couseneau edged Hannah Gilooly, 6-4, 3-6, 7-10.

The Mounties’ No. 2 doubles tandem of Ava Simon and Olivia Winters battled in a tough first set before falling, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

“Josie Dalsin is our lone senior and her pairing with Izzy Leonard at first doubles was a great team and they won a lot of matches for us this year,” Jacobbe said. “Piper Schulman played in more than half our matches, and she will have an opportunity to challenge for even more time next year and she will work hard in the off-season and will come ready to help replace Josie next year.”

The Mounties finish their year 13-3.

South Hadley (17-2) moves on to face Lee (17-0) in the sectional final on Tuesday afternoon at Springfield’s Forest Park.
