WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock volleyball team has a little rebuilding to do defensively this fall.

If its offense keeps playing like it did on Monday, it will have some time to make that adjustment.

Celina Savage notched five kills and three other Mounties had four kills apiece in a dominating three-set win over Belchertown.

Takiera Darrow, Madison MacHaffie and Emma Sandstrom each recorded four kills as Mount Greylock rolled by scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-3.

Ninth-grader Kylie Sweren served up 11 aces -- seven in a 16-point run to end the match.

“I’m really happy with our serving, and we’ve got a lot of people who can put pressure on the other team,” Mount Greylock coach Greg Geyer said. “I felt that [the Orioles] were able to get the balls back if they got the pass, but they did struggle with our service.”

The first big run of the match came midway through the first set, when Sweren delivered five straight points to build a 14-6 lead, the last point coming on an ace.

The Mounties were able to maintain that margin, finally putting the set away on an ace from Madison MacHaffie.

Mount Greylock already had a comfortable lead in the second when Charlotte Coody put things out of reach by serving seven straight points, a run that saw Belchertown continue to struggle to return serve.

In the third set, Julia DeChaine established the lead with a five-point run to get to 6-1.

It was 9-3 when Sweren went to the service line, and she never left it.

Coody had eight aces, and MacHaffie and DeChaine had four aces apiece.

After watching his team improve to 2-0 this fall, Geyer said the Mounties are looking to build on the momentum of a Fall 2 season last spring that saw them reach the semi-finals of the Berkshire County tournament while plugging some of the holes left by graduation.

“We graduated two defensive specialists, and they were very, very, very good,” he said. “This year, we’re just trying to build on that last year, get all the players to know the system and stay unified and really push every game.”

Mount Greylock goes to Lenox on Saturday.
