Hamp's Hot Start Dooms Mounties in Western Mass Final
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Northampton girls lacrosse blitzed Mount Greylock with five goals in the first five minutes of the game and went on to a 16-9 win in the Western Massachusetts Class B Championship on Tuesday night.
Makayla Fydenkevez scored six goals, and Imanni Power-Greene had a hat trick and four assists as the Blue Devils won their third game this season against the Mounties.
The two teamed up for Hamp’s first two goals – Power-Greene in the first minute of play and Fydenkevez less than a minute later.
It was 5-0, Blue Devils, with 7 minutes, 18 seconds left in the first quarter.
Finally, Mount Greylock was able to get something going on its attack.
Molly Cangelosi set up Reese Raymond for the first of her four goals to get the Mounties on the scoreboard, but they trailed, 6-1 after one quarter.
It was 7-1 early in the second when Addison Abel (two goals, two assists) intercepted a goalie clear and scored to make it a five-goal margin.
But Northampton finished the half on a 4-1 run to take an 11-3 lead into half-time.
Mount Greylock outscored the Blue Devils, 6-5, after half-time, and the Mounties scored the first two goals of the half – from Megan Lagerwall and Abel – to get the deficit down to six goals.
But Northampton scored the next three, going up, 14-5, with less than a minute left in the third.
Liv Eakin stopped 11 shots in goal for Mount Greylock (6-12), which learns on Wednesday where it will open play in the Division 4 State Tournament.
