DeGrenier, Mount Everett Edge Taconic
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Madison Ullrich hit two doubles and scored the winning run Monday to lead the Mount Everett softball team to a 2-0 win over Taconic at the Doyle Softball Complex.
Ullrich hit a one-out double in the top of of the fourth that led to a run on Lauren Edwards’ single to left for all the offense Eagles’ ace Chandler DeGrenier needed.
As it turns out, the game-winning hit brought home both runs. Sarah Beckwith was hit by a pitch to reach base behind Hannah Steuernagle (running for Ullrich), and both moved into scoring position when Tori Seward reached on an error to load the bases for Edwards.
Ullrich’s two doubles keyed an eight-hit attack for Mount Everett.
“I think we had all the scoring opportunities tonight,” Eagles coach Kurt DeGrenier said. “We hit the ball solid -- line drives to the outfield to make outs, even. I’m extremely pleased with the way we hit the ball, how we bunted, how we moved runners over.
“I think it’s our first real game where we put it all together against a good team.”
Taconic and Mount Everett each came into the game with one loss.
Taconic pitcher Ashley Keegan was the hard-luck loser on Monday after striking out 10 and allowing just one earned run.
Keegan also went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, accounting for half of the hits allowed by DeGrenier, who struck out six.
“I think we hit the ball,” Taconic coach Kevin Harrington said. “We just hit it at their players. We didn’t find holes.
“But we didn’t play our game. I think if we played our game better defensively, that’s a different outcome.”
Offensively, Taconic put runners in scoring position in the second and third innings.
In the second, Rebecca Herbert reached on a one-out infield single and moved up on Morgan Leighfield’s bunt before DeGrenier was able to get the third out on a ground ball to second.
In the third, a two-out error put Kailey Bell aboard, and Keegan drew a free pass to move her over, but a fly ball ended the inning.
DeGrenier left four runners on base over the first three innings.
After the Eagles rallied for a pair of runs in the fourth, she left just one runner on base the rest of the way and did not allow an opponent to reach second base.
Devan Galli had a pair of hits and a stolen base for Mount Everett (6-1), which goes to Monument Mountain on Tuesday.
Taconic (5-2) goes to Wahconah on Tuesday.
