DALTON, Mass. – Avery Vale-Cruz struck out 15 and hit an RBI triple Tuesday to lead the Wahconah softball team to a 3-1, bounceback win over Greenfield.

Ella Quinto put Wahconah ahead by driving in Taylar Hickey in the bottom of the second, and it stayed a 1-0 game until Vale-Cruz drove in Dani Barry in the sixth.

Vale-Cruz then came in on Hickey’s RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.

Greenfield (6-3) scored one in the sixth and put two runners on in the seventh, but Wahconah hung on to win, one day after falling to Turners Falls in extra innings.

“Great win after a tough loss yesterday,” Wahconah coach Dustin Belcher said. “A solid combination of good defense and timely hitting.

“Proud of the way the team responded.”

Wahconah (10-1) clinched a state tournament berth with the win. It goes to Turners Falls for a rematch on Thursday.
