Scapin, Lee Celebrate in Win over Greylock
LEE, Mass — For one of the few times this season, the Mount Greylock boys' basketball team was upstaged by its opponent on Thursday night.The Mounties dropped just their fourth game of the season, losing 76-62 on the road to Lee. Wildcats senior Matt Scapin was the big story of the game. In addition to pouring in a game-high 35 points, Scapin also joined the 1,000-point club when he scored two of his 25 first-half points with two minutes to go in the second quarter.
The win pushed Lee (12-4, 7-3) into second place in the South Division standings and knocked Greylock (12-4, 6-4) down to third with three league games remaining. The two teams will meet up again in the season finale on February 22.
"It was a hard-fought battle," Mounties head coach Bob Thistle said. "Matt Scapin is a tremendous player. It was a close game until the end of the fourth. We take a lot of positives from the game and look forward to the opportunity to play them again. It has been a great race in the South and in Division 3 this season. We are looking forward to the rest of the season."
Greylock kept the game competitive despite having an off shooting night. The visitors shot just 35 percent from the floor and only made 3 of the 16 shots they took from 3-point land. Led by Scapin's strong start, the Wildcats earned a 20-15 lead after the first quarter before pushing that margin to eight points going into halftime. The Mounties trailed by just six points heading into the fourth quarter but were outscored 23-15 in the final frame.
Junior center Tyler Picard led Greylock with 17 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Tyrell Thomas added 12 points and nine boards, while teammates Hank Barrett and Nathan Majumder chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jake LePrevost scored 13 points for Lee, including five foul shots in the fouth quarter. Heamon Williams also came up with 12 points for the hosts.
Greylock next plays at Mount Everett at 7 p.m. on Monday.
