Mount Greylock's Auger, Lenox's Shove Recognized
This week's iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week have their teams at the head of the class -- actually classes -- as the Western Massachusetts tournament pictures start to take shape.
The Mount Greylock boys lacrosse team started Friday as the No. 1 seed in Class C, and that position was only helped by a 15-11 win over Class B Wahconah on Friday evening.
Senior captain Brady Auger scored five goals and set up another to help lead the way in the rivalry win.
It capped a big week for Auger, who two days earlier scored twice in a win at Pittsfield to reach the 100-point mark in his high school career.
"That's for everybody," Auger said. "Shout out to my teammates, including the old teammates at Hoosac. Everyone made it possible for me."
Auger started his varsity career in Cheshire when Mount Greylock was part of a cooperative with Hoosac Valley. This year, he made the switch to play lacrosse where he goes to class.
In addition to providing a sweep of Wahconah, Friday's win improved Mount Greylock's record to 9-1. The Mounties start a busy three-game week on Monday when they go to McCann Tech.
As the No. 1 singles player for the Lenox girls tennis team, junior Katie Shove has the task of taking on the top players in the area day after day.
She usually comes out on the right side of the score. Her team always does.
Shove has led the Millionaires to a 9-0 record this spring. The returned from a vacation week absence with a 4-1 win over Ludlow on Tuesday.
Shove cruised in that win with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
The Millionaires ended the week as the No. 8-ranked team in the commonwealth in Division 4 according to the MIAA's in-season power rankings. In Western Massachusetts, they are ranked first in Class C.
Lenox has a big test on Monday when it hosts the No. 2 team in Class C, Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter, at 4:15 at the Lenox Community Center. In early April, the Millionaires edged PVCICS, 3-2.
Monday's match is the start of a busy week for Lenox with four matches, including a Tuesday visit to county rival Mount Greylock.
