Drury's Hinkell, Pittsfield's Conyers Recognized
The Western Massachusetts tournaments get underway this week, and the iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week have their teams well positioned to get back to their regional finals ... and beyond.
Pittsfield's girls basketball team won a Western Mass title last year en route to a spot in the Division 3 State Semi-Finals.
This winter, the Generals are ranked first in D3 in the latest MIAA in-season power rankings.
Caprese Conyers leads Pittsfield in scoring with just more than 16 points per game.
Last week, she scored a team-high 19 points and passed out five assists in a win over Northampton on Senior Night and posted a huge night in a win over Wahconah with 28 points and seven assists.
Pittsfield (13-4) learns Tuesday who it will host in the quarter-finals of the Western Mass Class B Tournament.
Drury's boys also start the week as the No. 1 team in the commonwealth.
The Blue Devils will be favored to get back to the Final Four in Division 5 when that tournament gets underway later this month.
In the meantime, Drury (15-2) has a regular season finale on Monday against Pioneer Valley and the Western Mass tourney to look forward to.
Looking back at last week, the Blue Devils extended a seven-game winning streak with a Berkshire County League-clinching 65-56 win at rival Hoosac Valley.
Connor Hinkell scored 20 points in that win.
While Jan. 5 AOTW Jorge Bond has been one of the most dangerous scorers in the state and the clear leader for the Blue Devils, Hinkell has been a solid contributor throughout, averaging just less than 10 points per game.
