NORTH ADAMS, Mass — Strong starts were a staple in the McCann Tech's girls' basketball team's recent three-game win streak. The Hornets didn't come out strong against Monson on Friday, however, resulting in a 44-34 loss at home.

The Mustangs jumped on the hosts early, taking a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. McCann's offensive struggles continued in the second frame, resulting in a 30-12 deficit at halftime. The Hornets (3-7) finally got things going in the second half but had dug too big a hole for them to climb out of.

"We came out cold and their strong man-to-man defense, along with their aggressive fast break allowed them to break away from us in the first half," McCann head coach Kristen Lewis said. "Although we caught fire in the second half, it was too little, too late. The girls played hard and didn't quit, which is a great quality for our team to demonstrate."

Katie Sweeney led Monson by scoring a game-high 20 points. Senior guard Brittany Briggs paced the Hornets with a team-high 12 points, while teammate Mary Nguyen also came through with 10 points and three assists.

The Hornets next play at Hampshire at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
