Hornets Make Positive Strides in Loss to Gaels

NORTH ADAMS, Mass —  The end result wasn't what the McCann Tech girls' basketball team had hoped for, but there were plenty of positives to take out of the Hornets' 38-33 loss to Holyoke Catholic on Thursday night.

One game after losing by 34 points to Mount Greylock, McCann (0-2) responded nicely by losing a hard-fought contest with a Gaels' squad that improved to 3-0 with the win. Every quarter was tightly contested, with Holyoke gaining a slight advantage in third by outscoring the hosts 12-9 in the frame. That gave the Gaels a four-point lead heading into the fourth and, despite one last run by the hosts, they were able to hold on for the win.

"We played well," McCann head coach Kristen Lewis said. "We were right with them the whole game. We started to go on a streak in the middle of the fourth quarter, but their coach called a timeout and we lost our groove. We have a lot to build on and are looking forward to the next game. This week we are going to limit turnovers and jump stops, which will help improve our game."

Ashley Alibozek had a big night for the Hornets, nailing three triples on her way to a game-high 16 points. The senior guard also grabbed 10 rebounds, while junior Mary Nguyen chipped in with six points and 11 boards. Holyoke was led by Melissa LaFlamme and Kieran Ramsey, who netted 11 and nine points, respectively.

McCann next plays at Mount Everett at 7 p.m. on Monday.
