Library Director Mindy Hackner told the trustees Wednesday that she recently attended budget meetings with Mayor Thomas Bernard and is still receiving pushback from the city in meeting Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners funding standards.
Staffing at the library has been an issue for some time now and five full-time employees must cover the 46 hours a week the library is open. Hackner said there are often gaps when employees take time off that cannot be filled with part-time employees and volunteers.
The City Council on Tuesday accepted an unknown amount of money left by late state Rep. Gailanne Cariddi for the North Adams Public Library.
Cariddi, who died at age 63 in June, named the library as a beneficiary under an insurance policy and apparently left cash benefits in her will.
The city may be known for its soaring steeples, but it also has an underused feature whose views easily rival those of its neighboring spires.
The Blackinton Mansion's two-story cupola offers an expansive panorama of the city's downtown and its circling mountain range. It's a sight that few have seen in the 120 years since the private residence became the North Adams Public Library.
