Tel-Electric Dam Removal Starts Monday in Pittsfield

The demolition of the Mill Street or Tel-Electric dam will begin on Monday. The project has been years in the making and the dam has been failing for years. The dam is attached to the Hawthorne Mill Building, which used to house the Tel-Electric Piano Player Co. Factory, and had been cited by the Massachusetts Office of Dam Safety as being in a hazardous condition nearly 20 years ago.

Tel-Electric Dam Demolition Eyed For This Summer

After two decades of concern for the Mill Street dam, demolition is expected to begin this summer. The dam is being removed for a number of reasons - public safety, water quality, removing contaminants behind, it and connecting the river for more public use. The dam is attached to the Hawthorne Mill Building, which used to house the Tel-Electric Piano Player Co. Factory, and had been cited by the Massachusetts Office of Dam Safety as being in hazardous condition nearly 20 years ago.

BRPC Raises Concerns With Removal of Tel-Electric Dam

BRPC officials would like the state to consider reusing dams for power more often. The comment comes from the organization's review of the removal of the Tel-Electric Dam on Mill Street. In that long-awaited project, the state did not require an alternative option of restoring the dam to generate power to be explored.

State Awards An Additional $400K Toward Removal Of Pittsfield Dam

The state has allocated another $400,000 to remove the Tel-Electric Dam on Mill Street. "This puts us in a much better position to feel confident that when we put this to bid we will have money for the things we want to do," Parks and Open Spaces Manager Jim McGrath said.
