The Sheffield Art League's annual summer Juried Art Show opened on July 3rd with a celebratory reception for all artists participating in the exhibition and an awards ceremony for the prize winners. SAL members, exhibiting artists and guests gathered at Dewey Memorial Hall on Main Street in Sheffield in the late afternoon to view some 100 works of art that had been selected from more than 160 submitted pieces and to hear the juror's decision for the top three artists and honorable mentions. Artists Susan Crofut and Jean Stover joined with J. Peter Bergman, art critic, writer and President of the Berkshire Review, to form the SAL's team of jurors who reviewed works created in a variety of mediums -- sculpture, oil, watercolor, collage, pastel and mixed media -- and in styles from realistic and naturalistic to abstract. Best In Show was awarded to Ellen Murtagh for her mixed media work entitled "Adrift on the Sea of Love", and which brings the artist $500 in prize money. Selma Hillman's scultpture "Man on Tree Stump" garnered second place and an award of $300. Alyce Chaikin and June Parker shared third place for "Arioso #7" in graphite and "River Bank" in pastel respectively. Honorable mentions for works in oil and collage went to Wayne Jenkins, Jean Neutzinger, Cindy Duryea and Jack Nodiff . The prize winning works of art and many more pieces remain on display until August 3 at Dewey Memorial Hall.
