Boston Symphony performs Falla's Opera “La Vida Brev”

Rafael Frühbeck De Burgos leads Boston Symphony in encore performance of Falla's Opera "La Vida Breve," featuring Maria Rodriguez, Jane Henschel, and Allyson Cchardy, July 25 at Tanglewood. Week four Seiji Ozawa hall schedule includes appearances by the Emerson String Quartet with Jeffrey Kahane on July 30 and pianist Piotr Anderszewski on July 31; Frühbeck De Burgos leads Tanglewood music center orchestra in music of Stravinsky on July 29. Renowned Spanish conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos leads the Boston Symphony in a special encore concert performance of Manuel de Falla's opera La vida breve, on Friday, July 25, at 8:30 p.m. in the Koussevitzky Music Shed, featuring the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and many of the same soloists who performed the work to great acclaim at Symphony Hall in March 2002. Soprano Maria Rodriguez returns in the lead role of Salud, joined by mezzo-sopranos Jane Henschel and Allyson McHardy, tenors Vincente Ombuena and Vinson Cole, baritone Gino Quilico, and bass-baritone Stephen West, as well as Flamenco performers Pedro Sanz (vocals), Antonio Reyes (guitar), and Nuria Pomares Rojas (dance). Written early in the composer's career, this story of unrequited love features the chorus to great effect, along with elements of Spanish folk music, dance, and percussion. This program opens with Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. On Saturday, July 26, at 8:30 p.m. in the Shed, one of the world's great Wagnerian sopranos, Jane Eaglen, returns to Tanglewood for the first time since 1994, joining conductor Jeffrey Tate and the Boston Symphony in excerpts from Wagner's Götterdämmerung, including Siegfried's Rhine Journey, Siegfried's Death and Funeral Music, and the Immolation Scene. Tanglewood favorite Gil Shaham is also featured in this concert, as soloist in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 in A, K.219. This program opens with the overture to Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel. Peruvian-born conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya - currently music director of the Fort Worth Symphony and associate conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and a recent winner of the Seaver Award, given annually to the most outstanding young conductor in America - makes his much-anticipated Boston Symphony debut on Sunday, July 27, at 2:30 p.m. in the Shed. Mr. Harth-Bedoya is joined by two popular soloists for this program, Garrick Ohlsson in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat, K.482, and soprano Dawn Upshaw in Osvaldo Golijov's Three Songs with Orchestra. The concert opens with Rossini's William Tell Overture and closes with Kodály's Dances of Galánta. This concert is sponsored by TDK. There will be an Open Rehearsal of the Sunday program on Saturday, July 26, at 10:30 a.m. in the Shed, with a Pre-Rehearsal Talk open to rehearsal ticket holders at 9:30 a.m. On Wednesday, July 30, at 8:30 p.m. in Seiji Ozawa Hall, the Emerson String Quartet returns to Tanglewood for a program to include Smetana's Quartet No. 1, From My Life, Janácek's Quartet No. 1, Kreutzer, and Brahms' Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, the latter featuring pianist Jeffrey Kahane in his Tanglewood debut. 2002 Gilmore Artist Award for piano winner Piotr Anderszewski, whose recording of Beethoven's Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, Op. 120, won great acclaim two years ago, performs this work on Thursday, July 31, at 8:30 p.m. in Ozawa Hall on a program with music of Bach: Three Preludes and Fugues from The Well-tempered Clavier, Book 2, BWV 893, and Partita No. 1 in B-flat, BWV 825. TANGLEWOOD MUSIC CENTER CONCERTS The Tanglewood Music Center, the Boston Symphony's advanced music academy for young performers and composers, presents a concert with conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra on Tuesday, July 29, at 8:30 p.m. in Ozawa Hall. This concert - the Daniel and Shirlee Cohen Freed Concert - features Mr. Frühbeck de Burgos leading the TMCO in Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, on a program with Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 2 (led by TMC Conducting Fellow James Gaffigan), and Haydn's Symphony No. 104, London (led by TMC Conducting Fellow Laura Jackson). Other TMC programs during Tanglewood's Week 4 including a Prelude Concert on Saturday, July 26, at 6 p.m. in Ozawa Hall (free to ticketholders for that evening's BSO Shed concert); a chamber music concert in Ozawa Hall on Sunday, July 27, at 10 a.m.; and a Steinway Piano Recital in the Chamber Music Hall at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, July 28. TANGLEWOOD TICKET INFORMATION Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is located in Lenox, Mass. Tanglewood is handicapped-accessible. Up to four free children's tickets are available per parent or legal guardian per concert at the Tanglewood Box Office the day of the concert. Children admitted without charge must sit with their parent or legal guardian on the lawn and those under age 5 must sit on the rear half of the lawn. Children under age 5 are not permitted in the Koussevitzky Music Shed or Seiji Ozawa Hall during concerts. All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket. This year's sale is an addition to the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce's Holiday Stroll on this Saturday, Dec. 13, 3–8 PM. Visitors can swing by the Mason Library for early parking, browse the sale until 3:00 PM, then meet Pete the Cat on the front lawn before heading downtown for the Stroll's shopping, music, and festive eats.
 
Can't make the Holiday Stroll? The book sale is open during regular Mason Library hours throughout December.
