The sink hole is back

The now famous sinkhole on the corner of West Housatonic and Center Street is back but this time, officials believe they know what the problem is. Pittsfield DPW Commissioner, Bruce Collingwood, said crews were able to get a special camera into the hole and discovered that a large drain pipe was the culpret and needed to be repaired. He said the last time they lowered a camera in the hole, the pipe was obscured by water. The drainpipe in question is 48 inches in diameter and an estimated 20-feet down. There are also other utilities under the road as well. One lane of traffic is currently open on either side of the sinkhole and Collingwood said that they might begin work on repairing the sinkhole, once and for all, tonight. That would mean total closure of that section of West Housatonic Street while repairs are made. This report was compiled by WUHN/WUPE Radio, Pittsfield
