NORTH ADAMS - A Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts professor of history has been selected for a Sarakawa Fellowship from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The Fellowship will support Dr. Kailai Huang's participation in the National Faculty Development Institute on "Incorporating Japanese Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum," to be held at San Diego State University from June 2 to 25. The one-month intensive seminar institute focuses on the study of various aspects of Japanese culture. It will allow faculty to learn from scholars, business leaders, artists and journalists about the Japanese civilization, history, language, business and education. The goal is for faculty to incorporate information about Japan into the courses they teach. Huang plans to use the information received at the institute to enrich his course on Japanese history during the fall 2004 semester. An Associate Professor, Huang has been with the Department of History at MCLA since 1993. He holds a Ph.D. in history from the State University of New York at Binghamton, an M.A. in history and Sino-American relations from Beijing Normal University and a B.A. in history from Hebei University. He teaches Asian and world history. Huang has written many publications including the recent "American Business and the China Trade Embargo in the 1950s," in Essays in Economic and Business History. Huang was awarded a research grant from China Unification Alliance in Taipei in 1998.
