WILLIAMSTOWN — Robert Knopp of Pittsfield started playing the piano for residents of Sweet Brook Care Centers in 1997, when his wife was admitted, as a way of entertaining her and other music-loving residents there. But when his wife died more than a year ago, Knopp continued to play. Earlier this week, as more than 25 residents listened to him perform “It’s a Wonderful World” and “Deep Purple,” among familiar favorites, he talked about why he continues to show up and sit down at the keyboard. “It lights up their life, and that’s what it’s all about,” he said. “When they enjoy it, that’s my reward.” Knopp was honored as volunteer of the year for his service on Thursday, April 22, at Sweet Brook’s annual volunteer recognition dinner. A retired machinist who worked at General Electric Co. and Pratt & Whitney, Knopp said he started piano lessons at age 8 1/2. His mother taught him for a month that, he said, was so difficult for them both that she sent him to a teacher. That worked out so well, it became a lifelong hobby, he said. In addition to playing piano, Knopp also helps transport residents to and from activities. He volunteers at least four days a week. “His music lights up the room and brings smiles to the faces of all our residents,” Sweet Brook President David LaPlante said at the recognition dinner. LaPlante, Suzanne Anair, director of support services, and activities director Judy Bombardier presented many other volunteers with certificates of appreciation and small gifts. “Volunteers have such a positive impact on our residents and are instrumental in enhancing their quality of life,” Bombardier said. Volunteers help with many activities throughout the year, including bringing their pets to visit residents. Volunteer entertainers in addition to Knopp share their musical talents and help in myriad ways. “No minimum amount of time is required, just a sincere desire to help others and the ability to donate some free time,” Bombardier said.
