WILLIAMSTOWN — Real estate broker Tom Elder has purchased the real estate business of Marianne McDonough, who will remain to manage the firm’s marketing and advertising as well as being the designated broker for the office. Elder is also buying the property, at 545 Main St., for an as yet undisclosed sum. The deal is expected to close on Friday. Elder, previously an owner of McClelland’s on Spring Street, has been a broker with Alton & Westall for the past four years. His purchase of McDonough’s firm represents a significant change in the local real estate scene. “This has been a wonderful business from Day One, with strong support from the community,” McDonough said Monday. “Having Tom Elder buy the business is the most positive thing that could be. It’s a beautiful way to see the business grow and to assure that we continue to deliver top service. We treat every sale as really important. Whether it’s $100,000 or $500,000, everybody gets personal attention, and I know Tom shares that philosophy.” She added, “Our job is to work closely with every client and every customer. It’s all about our customers and clients.” McDonough said she believed the time was right to expand the nine-year-old business. “With a new broker-owner, Tom Elder, and a new sales associate, Kate Brown, on board, we will take a team approach to real estate sales,” she said. The office has consistently held a 25-to-30-percent share of the local market, split, for the most part, with Alton & Westall and Harsch Associates, according to McDonough. She said Elder had approached her last spring about buying the business. “I enjoy selling houses; Tom enjoys selling houses, and he is bringing business experience as well,” she said. Elder said he is delighted to be with McDonough’s company and is pleased to own his own business again. Brown, joining the firm as sales associate, formerly managed the House of Walsh and is now with The Library Antiques. McDonough said at least 150 people attended Sunday’s open house held to introduce Elder and Brown. Invitations were sent to clients, customers, friends and associates, she said. “The turnout was phenomenal,” she said. She confirmed that Elder is buying the property, which she completely renovated in 1995. “We want to say that things are going to stay the same and be just as good but will only get better,” she said.
