Drury Rolls to 4-1 with Win at Mount Greylock
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Drury boys basketball team cruised past Mount Greylock on the road Monday night with an 85-46 win.
Drury (4-1) had five scorers in double figures, led by Jorge Bond with 19 points and Brayden Durant with 18. Shane Foucher added 13, while Sam Bullett and Connor Hinkell both finished with 11.
It was a fast start for the Blue Devils, jumping out to an 11-0 lead with a little bit of everything on the offensive end. They moved the ball well against the zone and found easy looks at the rim as well as from beyond the arc. Durant knocked down two 3-pointers on his way to 10 first-quarter points. Drury’s defense also forced several turnovers to fuel the transition game, and by the end of the first quarter the Blue Devils were firmly in control with a 21-7 lead.
Greylock (2-4), a very young team, did its best on the offensive end, but the Drury defense proved difficult to handle. Drury sped the Mounties up just enough to force turnovers. The Blue Devils continued to attack the paint against the zone with strong inside-out ball movement that led to easy baskets. Drury also dominated the offensive glass, making it even harder for Greylock to find any rhythm.
“As we see some of these other teams, we’re going to face more zone,” Drury coach Jack Racette said. “We’re a tough matchup in man-to-man with our guard play, so we have to keep improving our high-low action and our ball movement. I thought it was good in spurts, but moving the ball against a zone is huge.”
Drury carried a 30-point lead into halftime and looked to maintain that momentum in the second half. Mount Greylock did not fold, opening the third quarter on a 15-5 run and scoring as many points in that period as it had in the entire first half. Cole Creighton led the Mounties with 15 points.
The deficit, however, was too large to overcome, and the run seemed to refocus Drury, which closed the quarter strongly by returning to the same execution that built the lead.
Drury emptied the bench in the fourth quarter, a welcome development with a rare back-to-back looming on the road in Springfield against Veritas Prep.
“We have a lot of depth. Some of these guys who are not getting a ton of minutes would start on a lot of other teams,” Racette said. “We will deal with sickness and injuries at some point, so we have to be ready. Last year was a perfect example. We needed guys off the bench but could not close the deal. We have a good, tight-knit team, which is huge. With the trip to Springfield tomorrow, we really have to be mentally tough heading into the new year.”
For Mount Greylock, the Mounties will take positives from the performance as they continue to develop with such a young roster. They travel to Hoosac Valley on Friday.
