Williamstown - The next Looking at Lunchtime Gallery Talk at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will be held Thursday, January 12 at 12:30 pm. Michael Cassin, the Clark's curator of education, will discuss Winslow Homer's Perils of the Sea during a half hour gallery talk. The talk and gallery admission are free.
Homer's extended stay on the Northeast coast of Britain produced some of his most powerful images, the watercolor Perils of the Sea among them. This moving image of members of the fishing community of Cullercoates, in Northumberland, was subsequently made into one of Homer's most dramatic etchings. The January 12 gallery talk will look at the similarities and the differences between the two images, and place them in the context of Homer's fascination with the sea and those who depend on it for their livelihood.
The Looking at Lunchtime series is held the second Thursday of every month featuring a curator or special guest highlighting a work of art or collection at the Clark. Attendees are welcomed to purchase food from the courtyard cafe or bring a bag lunch.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August.) Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $10 for adults, free for children 18 and under, members, and students with valid ID.
