Simon's Rock College of Bard has announced a new scholarship program for Berkshire area high school students.
The Berkshire Regional Scholarship Program awards significant scholarships to eligible students from 14 counties: In Massachusetts, Berkshire, Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin; in Connecticut, Hartford and Litchfield; in New York, Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster, Greene, Albany and Renssaelaer; and in Vermont, Bennington and Windham. Students living in these counties who are ready for the challenge of college after the tenth or eleventh grade may be eligible to participate.
"Due to the generosity of our supporters, we are able to offer this program," said Provost Mary B. Marcy. "As we begin celebration of our fortieth anniversary year at Simon's Rock College, we are delighted to be able to offer these scholarships. The people in the Berkshire community and surrounding area continue to support Simon's Rock; we wanted to find a tangible way to show our gratitude. We are also pleased to be able to say to young people that a truly exciting opportunity is in their back yard, and we can help them to take advantage of it through this program."
The Berkshire Regional Scholarship Program was designed to offer bright, highly motivated children of area residents the opportunity to become full-time students at Simon's Rock. To be eligible for admission through this program, the student must have completed the 10th, 11th or 12th grade with a strong high school record and must be less than 19 years old. While the program will be fully operating for the fall of 2007, a few places are available for this coming academic year. Students who are interested in applying to the college through this program for the upcoming academic year are urged to do so soon, as the application process is rigorous and classes begin in late August.
Simon's Rock is known for its low student-to-teacher ratio, its strong interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum, and its commitment to younger students. At Simon's Rock, students find themselves living and learning among their intellectual peers in an environment specifically designed to meet their developmental needs.
Founded on the idea that many bright, highly motivated young people are ready to undertake serious college work, Simon's Rock was created through the extraordinary acts of philanthropy and vision of two women: Elizabeth Blodgett Hall and her mother, Margaret Kendrick Blodgett. Mrs. Blodgett gave the land, which is now the college's main campus on Alford Road in Gt. Barrington, and established a foundation to support the construction and growth of a new educational institution on that property. Mrs. Hall had the vision to create the nation's first "early college," and committed the resources of the Blodgett Foundation to realizing her vision, building and sustaining Simon's Rock through its first decades. The College will celebrate its fortieth anniversary this academic year, with events and opportunities for celebration and recognition.
Since its founding, the model of Simon's Rock has inspired other educators to start early entrance programs and early college high schools, and now the college serves as a model for a vibrant national early college movement. It remains the only four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences for students ready to begin college early.

BVNA Nurses Raise Funds for Berkshire Bounty
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Nursing Association members of the Berkshire Visiting Nurses Association raised $650 to help with food insecurity in Berkshire County.
The nurses and health-care professionals of BVNA have given back to the community every holiday season for the last three years. The first year, they adopted a large family, raised money, bought, wrapped and delivered the gifts for the family. Last year, they sold raffle tickets and the money raised went to the charitable cause of the winner.
This year, with food insecurity as a rising issue, they chose to give to Berkshire Bounty in Great Barrington.
They sold raffle tickets for a drawing to win one of two items: A lottery ticket tree or a gift certificate tree, each worth $100. They will be giving the organization the donation this month.
Berkshire Bounty seeks to improve food security in the county through food donations from retailers and local farms; supplemental purchases of healthy foods; distribution to food sites and home deliveries; and collaborating with partners to address emergencies and improve the food system.
