Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts President Mary K. Grant has announced the appointment of Tyler Fairbank to the College’s Board of Trustees. Fairbank, the president of the Berkshire Economic Development Corporation (BEDC), will fill the seat held by Stephen E. Fix, Ph.D., an English professor at Williams College, who served on the Board for 10 years. “I’m thrilled to be a trustee,” Fairbank said. “When you look at economic development in the Berkshires, it’s a little different than other parts of the state and other parts of the country. We have a population challenge and an education challenge and what MCLA is doing in terms of taking on the core issues that are affecting those challenges is absolutely spot on.” The BEDC facilitates, coordinates and leads countrywide economic development efforts designed to attract and retain high quality employers and employees and strengthen the economy of the Berkshires. In his position, Fairbank also serves as the lead business development executive for Berkshire County. “Tyler has deep roots in the community and has brought great energy and enthusiasm to his important work with BEDC,” Grant said. “I am delighted by both his enthusiasm for MCLA and his advocacy to increase support for the College and public higher education. He will be a committed and engaged trustee and a good colleague.” MCLA Board of Trustees Chairman Richard C. Lamb said he was excited that someone so well established in Berkshire County as Fairbank would be joining the Board. “Tyler is very highly regarded in the area’s education and business communities. He has great contacts and will be a great advocate for MCLA,” Lamb said. “Tyler will be a great addition to the MCLA Board,” said Matthew Harris, MCLA trustee. “MCLA truly serves the whole county, and having such great representation from the Pittsfield and Central Berkshire area is welcome. In addition, Tyler brings the perspective of the Berkshire County business community, which is very much one of MCLA's core constituencies.” Fairbank, a Berkshire County native and a 1987 graduate of Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in economics and philosophy from UMass-Amherst in 1991, a certificate of advanced graduate studies from the School of Management at UMass-Amherst in 1993, and a Masters of Business Administration from UMass-Amherst in 1996. He currently serves as an advisory committee member on the Berkshire Regional Competitiveness Council and on the Berkshire Visitors Bureau board of directors. Fairbank also is an advisory board chairman for Berkshire Academies, the vice chairman on the St. Agnes School Board and a member of the Berkshire Museum Board of Trustees. Fairbank lives in Pittsfield with his wife, Christina, and their children, Ryder and Savannah.
