Richard says:
As far back as I can recall – before I started scribbling, before I picked up my first crayon – I have always had what seems to me an instinctive urge to make a mark. I cannot ever remember not being an artist. It is, I believe, the path that chose me and my direction as an artist, likewise has seemed to choose itself. My decidedly surrealist bent predates any knowledge I had of surrealism as a formal movement – I made no conscious choice to adopt it.
For me, the making of art is the essence of introspection, the subconscious a wellspring of inspiration, the imagery of dreams the far more real than our waking world in terms of what is truly reflective of our own humanity.
Fueled by a love of poetry, my current work is a fusion of my written and visual art. My aim is not to illustrate poetry (I believe a poem’s imagery should stand on its own), but rather to augment it -- as a backdrop to the reader’s own imagination.
Eight Days To Never, a series of three confessional poems paired with three base-relief sculptures is perhaps my most personal work to date. Drawn from a motif of love and loss, joy and pain, the sculptural aspect of light and shadow seemed most appropriate to these poems.
