PITTSFIELD — In a suspended game resumed from July 18, the Torrington (Conn.) Twisters kept their playoff hopes alive Monday with a 1-0 victory at Wahconah Park.

On July 18, Torrington took a first inning lead against Pittsfield Dukes starter Alex MacKenzie (Canisius) on an RBI single from Joe De Pinto (USC). Twister starter Andrew Triggs (USC) retired Craig Hertler (San Jose State) and was ahead of Jason Martin (San Jose State) 1-2 when the game went into a rain delay and was later postponed.

In the continuation of the game Monday afternoon, Michael Ness (Duke) took over for Pittsfield while Alex Valadja (JMU) came in to pitch for Torrington. Both pitchers kept the opposition scoreless as they piled up the strikeouts.

Ness pitched the rest of the way for the Dukes only allowing an infield single to Jimmy Rivas (New Haven) in the third inning. The right handed pitcher retired eighteen of the 19 hitters he faced, keeping the Dukes' offense in the game, and striking out four hitters.

Valadja also kept the Dukes off the scoreboard allowing four hits and striking out six in his 5 2/3 innings of relief. Valadja would get into a jam in the 3rd and 5th innings but was able to work himself out of trouble.

In the bottom of the third, Valadja set down the first two hitters but, but following back to back singles, Chris Edmondson (Le Moyne) would draw a walk to load up the bases.  Jason Krizan (Dallas Baptist) then struck out to end the inning leaving three runners on base.

In the fifth, Perry Silverman (Canisius) led off with a single, but Billy Messer (Slippery Rock) failed to drop down a sacrifice bunt and struck out. Hertler and Martin would both ground-out as the left-hander worked out of another jam.

Closer Robert Chimpky (Utah) came into the game in the seventh and retired the Dukes in order to preserve the 1-0 victory.

The win marks the first time Torrington has defeated the Dukes this season as the Twisters improve to 13-23. Torrington will travel home for a night off Monday, and host the Pittsfield Dukes in a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 5.

Pittsfield's record drops to 22-14 and the Dukes will host the Keene (N.H.) Swamp Bats in the second game of their twi-night doubleheader. Louie Bernardini (Wheaton College) will start Game 2 with a record of 1-1 and an earned run average of 5.85. Game 2 is scheduled to begin at 7 o’clock at Wahconah Park.

Lanesborough Passes FY 2027 Budget, Warrant Articles

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff
LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Town meeting on Tuesday approved an almost $14 million fiscal 2027 budget, and approved bylaws for short-term rentals and signage, and for public safety vehicles.

Of the 20 warrant articles, one, Article 7, to use free cash to pay prior fiscal year bills of $941.27 was indefinitely postponed by Moderator David Rolle because the bills were for the fire association.

Some 247 of the town's more than 2,600 registered voters filled Lanesborough Elementary School, debating articles during a meeting that lasted more than three hours.

The town's 2027 spending plan is up more than 10 percent, with the main increases from higher enrollment in the regional schools and the McCann Technical School renovation project.

Voters approved the assessment of $7,586,284 for Mount Greylock Regional School. They also approved Article 11, which was the use of $16,298.48 in free cash for the McCann's roof and window replacement project so as not to impact the budget.

Ambulance Director Jen Weber is planning 24-hour coverage, which means more staff and a hike in her budget. Article 5 asked the town to appropriate $234,100 to operate the Ambulance Enterprise Fund for salaries and expenses, which passed.

Fire Chief Jeff DeChaine spoke to the audience on his articles and the need for a new truck to replace the 1996 fire truck, listed on the warrant articles for a total $813,366, which includes a $100,000 contingency cost on whether a 2026 model-year chassis can be secured before new emissions standards in 2027. If they get the 2026 chassis, that contingency likely won't be needed.
