The North Adams branch of Greylock Federal Credit Union was a long time coming, both city & credit union officials concede. But on Friday, a downtown site hosted a small celebration, marking the groundbreaking for the new branch.
The new Greylock facility will be located at 66 Main Street in the K-Mart shopping center. Renovations on a 3,200 square-foot storefront are well underway. The new branch will include an ATM, a night deposit drop off and a separate full-function drive up teller station in the parking lot.
"The incredible support that the Greylock Federal Credit Union has received from area residents during the lengthy process of securing a location has never wavered," said James Lynch, Greylock's president and CEO. "Today, we acknowledge their patience, thank all those who made this possible and begin the countdown to the day we open these doors making Greylock's products and services more accessible to the people of North Adams and the surrounding communities."
Lynch pledged that Greylock would be "good neighbors" and "good citizens" in the City of Steeples. "We're pleased to be a part of the downtown community in North Adams," he said.
Mayor John Barrett was among those to welcome the credit union to the city. The association, he suggested, would be worth wait. "Greylock Federal Credit Union coming to North Adams was not an overnight success story by any means," joked the mayor.
Greylock and city officials took turns using a golden shovel for the ceremonial groundbreaking at the site. Kent Hudson, vice president of marketing and operations, said that an opening date has not yet been selected. "With construction underway, we'll be able to pinpoint a grand opening date in the very near future," he added.
Experienced management touted
Jean E. Noel, assistant vice president, will manage the North Adams satellite operation. "Jean has been an industry fixture for over 20 years in downtown North Adams," said Angelo Stracuzzi, executive vice presidents and chief operating officer of Greylock. "Her familiarity within the community is a comforting fact to consumers in North County and a real plus for the credit union. We're proud to be part of the continuing revitalization of downtown North Adams."
The staff will include Anna Flynn, member service officer; Claire Vanderburgh, head teller; Rebecca Cyr, senior teller; Diana Bonnett, teller; Linda Macek, teller; and Brenda Cariddi, teller.
Greylock Federal Credit Union is wholly owned by its more than 54,000 members. The North Adams branch will be Greylock's ninth location in the county, with other branches in Pittsfield, Adams, Great Barrington and Lee. Anyone who lives or works in the county is eligible to become a member.

McCann Recognizes Superintendent Award Recipient

Landon LeClair and Superintendent James Brosnan with Landon's parents Eric and Susan LeClair, who is a teacher at McCann.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Superintendent's Award has been presented to Landon LeClair, a senior in McCann Technical School's advanced manufacturing course.
The presentation was made last Thursday by Superintendent Jame Brosnan after Principal Justin Kratz read from teachers' letters extolling LeClair's school work, leadership and dedication.
"He's become somewhat legendary at the Fall State Leadership Conference for trying to be a leader at his dinner table, getting an entire plate of cookies for him and all his friends," read Kratz to chuckles from the School Committee. "Landon was always a dedicated student and a quiet leader who cared about mastering the content."
LeClair was also recognized for his participation on the school's golf team and for mentoring younger teammates.
"Landon jumped in tutoring the student so thoroughly that the freshman was able to demonstrate proficiency on an assessment despite the missed class time for golf matches," read Kratz.
The principal noted that the school also received feedback from LeClair's co-op employer, who rated him with all fours.
"This week, we sent Landon to our other machine shop to help load and run parts in the CNC mill," his employer wrote to the school. LeClair was so competent the supervisor advised the central shop might not get him back.
