HADLEY, Mass. - The NESCAC announced the 2008-09 Men’s Swimming and Diving All-Conference Team. The top three finishers in each event at the 2009 NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship received All-Conference recognition.

Senior Norman Scott (Elmsford, N.Y.) of Williams was named Swimmer of the Meet at the conference championship this past weekend. Scott rewrote the NESCAC record books in the butterfly events, setting new marks in the 50, 100 and 200-yard fly. He finished his career winning the 50-yard butterfly at each of the last four NESCAC meets while also winning the 100-yard event for the first time in his career on Saturday.

Scott was also part of the Ephs’ winning 400-yard Medley Relay team. Classmate Tyler Bonewell (Burnsville, Minn.), the 2008 NESCAC Swimmer of the Meet, came away with Four Year High-Point Swimmer honors as he finished his career with titles in the 100 and 200-yard Breaststroke.

Amherst senior Kai Robinson (Vashon, Wash.) repeated as the Diver of the Meet after winning the 1-meter and 3-meter Diving events for the second year in a row. Wesleyan senior Dave Wilkinson (Rowayton, Conn.) was honored as the Four Year High-Point Diver.

Williams head coach Steve Kuster garnered Swimming Coach of the Year accolades for the second time in three years. Kuster first received the award in 2001 before winning it again in 2007. Kuster's Ephs entered the NESCAC meet with a 6-3 regular season record and struggled on day one of the NESCAC Championships, trailing Tufts by 55 points. The Ephs regrouped and retook the lead at the end of day two and with six individual titles and a relay victory won the 2009 NESCAC crown.

Amherst’s Mary Ellen Clark was recognized as Diving Coach of the Year for the second-straight year.

Striking Out Cancer in Berkshires Holds Sunday Party Before June 27 Games

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires.com Sports
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Striking out Cancer in the Berkshires has been bringing smiles for half a decade.

This year, it also is bringing Smiley.

A day of community baseball and softball games that act as a fund-raiser for the Jimmy Fund is the brainchild of Joe DiCicco, who has expanded the event’s footprint over the years and seen a steady growth in money raised as a result.

This year’s games are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on June 27 on Buddy Pellerin Field at Clapp Park.

But the festivities begin this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sideline Saloon on Fenn Street, where DiCicco invites families to come down, free of charge, to take photos with a Boston Red Sox World Series Trophy and meet Boston mascot Wally the Green Monster and Smiley, the mascot of the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox.

“It’s just a little way to give back to the community to start the week,” DiCicco said. “Last year, we had the trophy for the first time, and they want to bring it back, so that’s a good thing. Wally is different, and so is Smiley.”

What has not changed is DiCicco’s dedication to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund, inspired by Einar Gustafson, a child who beat cancer with the help of Dr. Sidney Farber in 1948 and shared his story with the world under the name Jimmy to protect his anonymity.
