Bruce Grinnell is NBH Board chairman; Dr. Cluett elected to board

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Bruce Grinnell of North Adams will serve as chairman of the Northern Berkshire Healthcare Board of Trustees following his election by NBH Corporators. Corporators also elected Jonathan Cluett, MD, to a three-year term on the Board of Trustees at their annual meeting. Re-elected to the board were Ellen Bernstein and Bryon Sherman.

The NBH board officers for the coming year include Arthur Turton, M.D., vice chairman; Sherman, secretary; and Christopher Hickey, treasurer. Mr. Hickey is the newly appointed chief financial officer of NBH.

Mr. Grinnell, an attorney and founding member of Grinnell Smith LLP, was first elected to the NBH Board in 2007. He led the CARE Campaign for North Adams Regional Hospital that raised $11.7 million for the expansion and modernization of NARH, and has chaired the NBH Development Committee since 2007. He has also been a member of the REACH Community Health Foundation board of directors, and is a former ten-year Trustee of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. His community involvement encompasses many years, and has been recognized twice in recent years. Grinnell won Williamstown’s Faith R. Scarborough Community Service Award in 2007, and the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce Francis H. Hayden Award in 2005. Grinnell was a founding member of Greylock ABC and the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation. He has been a practicing attorney for 35 years and is a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

Dr. Cluett is an orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedic Associates of Northern Berkshire. A 1996 Williams College graduate, Dr. Cluett earned his medical degree at Columbia University in New York City. Upon graduating from medical school in May 2000, he began residency training at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Santa Monica Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in California, and was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2008. Dr. Cluett has practiced in North Adams since 2006.

Ms. Bernstein is a consultant and the former publisher of The Advocate. Since her departure from The Advocate in June 2003, she has continued to work on consulting assignments while expanding her role as a volunteer in the community. She is a former director of Inland Press Association, a national newspaper organization, and continues to be involved as co-chair of Inland's Minority Outreach Committee and director of the Inland Fellows Program. She chairs the REACH Committee, has been on NBH's Governance Committee since January 2005, and was active in the CARE Campaign for North Adams Regional Hospital. 


Mr. Sherman is a partner and certified public accountant with Smith Watson & Company in North Adams and Great Barrington; he joined the firm in 1998. Sherman serves on the Board of Directors of the North Adams Rotary Club and Pittsfield Little League Rookie Division. He is also treasurer of the Catholic Youth Center and is active in the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce. He shares his enthusiasm for sports by coaching youth baseball, basketball, and soccer. Sherman lives in Pittsfield with his wife Stacie and their four children.

Corporators added three new members to their ranks, including Dr. Cluett, Brendan Bullett of North Adams, and Timothy Dolan of Dalton.

NBH corporators serve as liaisons to the Northern Berkshire community and have the authority to approve nominations to the Board of Corporators and the NBH Board of Trustees, and make adjustments in the bylaws governing NBH.

BVNA Nurses Raise Funds for Berkshire Bounty

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Nursing Association members of the Berkshire Visiting Nurses Association raised $650 to help with food insecurity in Berkshire County.
 
The nurses and health-care professionals of BVNA have given back to the community every holiday season for the last three years. The first year, they adopted a large family, raised money, bought, wrapped and delivered the gifts for the family. Last year, they sold raffle tickets and the money raised went to the charitable cause of the winner. 
 
This year, with food insecurity as a rising issue, they chose to give to Berkshire Bounty in Great Barrington.
 
They sold raffle tickets for a drawing to win one of two items: A lottery ticket tree or a gift certificate tree, each worth $100. They will be giving the organization the donation this month.
 
Berkshire Bounty seeks to improve food security in the county through food donations from retailers and local farms; supplemental purchases of healthy foods; distribution to food sites and home deliveries; and collaborating with partners to address emergencies and improve the food system.
