But right now, he's focused on enlisting in the Army.
"I'm going in so I can get more college and earn a living," he said after the short graduation ceremony at the school on Monday night. Fellow graduates were scattered across the lawn outside the gym, their arms full of diplomas, ballooons and children.
Mento, a 2010 Drury High School graduate, was one of 31 students receiving certificates in postsecondary and postgraduate courses, and the only one graduating from the automotive course. "It had its moments but it was fun," he said. "I plan on doing this when I get out [of the service]."
His guardians, Bryan and Arlene Superneau, said they were proud of his accomplishments and supportive of his decision to join the military. "I came a long ways with them," said Mento.
Mento may be thinking of automotive as a fallback but Danielle Luczynski is positive that medical assisting will suit her.
"I was really interested in the medical field," said Luczynski, who is toying with the idea of coming back for the surgical technology program. Meanwhile, she's already secured a spot in the MAC lab at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield where she did her internship.
Her parents, Richard and Kathleen Luczynski, said she'd worked hard this year. "She put her nose to the grindstone," said Richard. "We're so proud of her."
"The most important thing you'll earn is the trust of your customers," he told them. "Your customers may go by many different names; they may be patients, clients and residents. ... Trust and respect are earned by caring, by being knowledgable, working hard and being honest."
Building trust creates a bond that will make it easier for those difficult discussions that may arise with clients and help in working together to find a solution, Maloney said. "At the end of even the most difficult day, at the very least, you should be able to say you're proud of what you've done today."
