NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts athletics department has hired Rob Colantuono as the new women's cross-country head coach and Andres Lima to lead the men's tennis program.

Colantuono is the first head coach in the program's history, while Lima takes over a men's tennis program that has been restarted.

Colantuono has an extensive background in coaching and education throughout Berkshire County. He coached at the college level from 1991-1993 at Williams College, where he led the women's cross country program. He also has coached at the varsity level at Lenox, Pittsfield and Drury high schools, respectively.

Colantuono's teams at Williams competed on the national stage for his two seasons there, and he won numerous championships within the county during his tenure with the high schools. He gave up coaching to focus on education in the mid-1990s when he became the principal at Crosby Elementary School in Pittsfield.

Most recently, he was the principal at Thoreau Elementary School in Concord for the past five years.

The women's cross-country program will open with a meet at Smith College.

Lima is head tennis professional at the Country Club of Pittsfield. He has instructed at other various county clubs as well, including Stockbridge Country Club, Berkshire West Athletic Club and Canyon Ranch.

A current member of the U.S. Tennis Association, Lima also was a tennis professional in Ecuador. He provided professional training while ranking as high as No. 39 in the country during his tenure in the
early 2000s.

Lima will build a program that will begin varsity competition this fall and continue into the spring semester. MCLA will play a 10-match schedule over the course of the academic year.

North Adams Police Reaches League Title Game

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires.com Sports
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – North Adams Police Department jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 4-3 win over Lee’s Wildcat Sports Group Wednesday in the semi-finals of the Berkshire County Cal Ripken minors division tournament at Kemp Park.

David Atwell had an RBI single at the plate and was one of three NAPD pitchers to combine for 16 strikeouts in the six-inning win.

Balls in play were hard to come by for either team, but Atwell and Ben Vivori each singled in the bottom of the first as Police scored a run that proved to be the difference in the game.

“We switched our lineup for the first time this year for this game, and our goal was to get some runs in that first inning,” NAPD coach Patrick Wood said. “And we got the one.

“We put Ben Vivori at the top. He’s been our most solid hitter. He has not been leading off. We put him up first just to try to get him on, move him along the basepaths and try to get the ball in play.”

The tactic worked. Vivori delivered an infield single and moved up on a couple of balls that got to the backstop before Atwell hit a one-out infield single of his own to make it 1-0.

NAPD then scored three times without the benefit of a base hit in the bottom of the second.
