PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Museum’s Little Cinema, in partnership with Jacob's Pillow Dance, will present a world premiere screening of the documentary film "Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance" at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The film will be shown simultaneously with the screening at Lincoln Center in New York City. Tickets are $8; $6 for museum and Pillow members. Tickets are available in advance by calling 413-443-7171, Ext.10, or at the museum.

"Joffrey" tells the story of the Joffrey Ballet, the groundbreaking cultural treasure known as the first truly American dance company. Narrated by Mandy Patinkin and directed by Bob Hercules ("Bill T. Jones: A Good Man"), the film documents how choreographer Robert Joffrey revolutionized American ballet by merging modern dance with traditional ballet technique, combining art with social statement, and setting ballets to pop and rock music scores. The film features rare excerpts from many seminal Joffrey works including "Astarte," "Trinity" and "Billboards."

A panel discussion with moderator Sasha Anawalt, author of "The Joffrey Ballet: Robert Joffrey and the Making of an American Dance Company"; film director Bob Hercules; current Joffrey Ballet artistic director Ashley C. Wheater; and former Joffrey principal dancers Trinette Singleton and Christian Holder will be webcast live following the film, and audience members will be able to submit questions for the panel through Twitter. This event marks the first time that a film has simulcast its world premiere from a major festival, in this case the Film Society of Lincoln Center's 40th annual Dance on Camera Festival.

This summer, as part of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival’s 80th anniversary season, the Joffrey Ballet will perform in the Ted Shawn Theatre for the first time in nearly 50 years, from Wednesday, Aug. 22 to Sunday, Aug. 26. The program will include "Bells" by Yuri Possokhov, former Bolshoi Ballet dancer and resident choreographer for the San Francisco Ballet, set to piano music by Sergei Rachmaninov. The company also will perform Taiwanese-American dancer/choreographer Edwaard Liang's "Age of Innocence," danced to music by Philip Glass and Thomas Newman.

Pittsfield Council Says 'Yes' to Soccer at Crane Park

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

The pitch will have the logos of the city and the US. and Massachusetts soccer associations.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is gladly accepting a "mini-pitch" from the U.S. Soccer Foundation to bring games back to Crane Park.

Fueling excitement around the World Cup, U.S. Soccer has been working with the Massachusetts Youth Soccer League to make these facilities available to 20 communities — one of which will be at the park at the intersection of Benedict Road and Springside Avenue.

The City Council accepted the gift on Tuesday during its regular meeting.

A mini pitch is a compact, modular field typically used for soccer, and it can also accommodate inline skates. It has a galvanized steel border with built-in goals and a rubber plastic surface that is clicked together; installed on the existing inline hockey court.

Ward 2 Councilor Cameron Cunningham said he has gone door to door speaking with nearby residents, and they are "really excited" about the upgrade. He also sees it as a great addition.

"They say that nobody really uses the court a ton now, and they are excited to see kids back on there playing," he said.

Decades ago, the Crane Park facility was a wading pool. It closed in 1980, and before the turn of the century, it was filled in and marked for hockey.

Parks, Open Space, and Natural Resources Manager James McGrath explained that the wooden border around the rink is showing its age, has been vandalized and tagged, and the facility is seeing a "real decline" in use.

"This would seem to be an appropriate spot for us to remove the board system that's in place and install the mini pitch system through this grant," he said.
