Stamford Voters Approve School Budget
Residents lined up to vote on the school budget on Monday. The budget passed, 107-47. |
On March 5, voters shot down a proposed $1.8 million budget. Since then, a handful of meetings have been hosted for further discussion. On April 5, the School Board came up with the current total budget, with $60,662 in cuts.
High school tuition for McCann Technical School and Drury High School, both in North Adams, Mass., counted for $36,850 of the cuts. Still, concerns about the cost of secondary education loom because students must attend high schools outside of town.
"The tuition just sounds like it was overestimated before it doesn't sound like anyone did any negotiating to lower that," resident David Orton said.
Another $13,362 was cut from the instruction and equipment. Maintenance, which includes equipment, heating and electricity, saw $6,600 in cuts. Technology and the library also saw cuts, $2,500 and $650, respectively.
"The bottom line is most of this budget cut was taken from this building and these children," resident Carl Taylor said.
The Select Board briefly met afterward to announce that it did not have sufficient information yet to discuss the sidewalk project, which was expected to be voted on.
