Greylock Credit Union Promotes Risk Management Manager

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Greylock Federal Credit Union has promoted John Masten to assistant vice president risk management manager and compliance officer.

Greylock President Marilyn L. Sperling said, "John has an exceptionally strong professional background in the financial services industry. Given the fast pace of change in the current regulatory environment, it's absolutely critical that we maintain a strong compliance team, and John has demonstrated that he has the values, depth of knowledge and experience to effectively lead regulatory compliance for our Credit Union."

Masten came to Greylock in 2011 with more than 10 years of experience in banking, commercial lending, credit risk management and compliance. He will manage Greylock's regulatory compliance efforts and assist in the implementation of proactive institutional risk mitigation strategies. Masten has a Bank Secrecy Act Compliance Specialist designation, holds a bachelor of science degree in finance from Siena College and is a graduate of the Berkshire Leadership Program class of 2007.

Masten is a past chairman and current member of the Berkshire Leadership Program Steering Committee; treasurer of the Pittsfield Anti-Tuberculosis Association; member of the Western Massachusetts Compliance Association; and has served in various capacities for the Berkshire United Way.

He lives in Pittsfield with his wife, Jennifer and their two children, Alexis and Noah.

Multiple Departments Respond to Lanesborough Structure Fire

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire off Narragansett Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Fire Department received a call from the owner of 6 Bangor St. reporting smoke and flames at around 1:44 p.m.

Firefighters arriving on scene reported heavy smoke emanating from the 1940s single-family ranch home in the thickly settled neighborhood.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries. 

"The homeowner was outside doing some work, evidently, opened the door when she came back in the house, and there were flames and smoke, so she backed out and called us, and that's all we know right now," Deputy Fire Chief Glen Storie said around 2:35 p.m. 

The fire was out at that time, and first responders observed "quite a bit of damage" to the home. The cause is still under investigation. 

Lanesborough, Cheshire, and Pittsfield departments responded to the scene, and Hancock covered the station during the call. 

"The first crew in knocked the fire right down with the first engine," Storie said. 

Smoke could be seen coming from the back of the home. Part of Narragansett Avenue and Bangor Avenue were blocked off while firefighters battled the blaze.
