Each artist participating in "The Study" has scoured for materials from books to the Earth itself for the inspiration and creation of their pieces which beg the viewer to examine the intricacy and meaning behind each individual creation. In their own exploration of their media, each artist breathes life into materials and images that have lost their own through age, oppression, frailty, and the unknown.

New works from Berkshire-based artist Sean Riley – including paintings on panel and dyed-paper collages – are now on display at Allium Restaurant in Great Barrington. Riley's colorful works evoke certain qualities of fabric and use patterns that fold in upon themselves in origami-like fashions that give rise to a tension between flat and three-dimensional space. In his collage work, Riley soaks his paper in numerous baths of colored water, allowing the color to sink into the paper, adding a rich and tactile quality to the works. Using tape as a "resist” he is able to create patterns on the paper in much the same way that is done with traditional fabrics.

The North Adams Office of Tourism & Community Events, along with the North Adams Chamber of Commerce present the Main Street Market! The Main Street Market, a combination of craft fair, art fair, and farmers market, will take place during Solid Sound weekend. This event hopes to not only draw in visitors to the city's downtown, but also the locals looking for something different to do during this exciting weekend. The purpose of this market is to showcase art, goods, foods and produce that are unique to the Berkshires, and to compliment - not compete with - the existing downtown shops. This juried event is currently looking for vendors to participate. Vendors applying to sell crafts and arts such as jewelry, pottery, clothing and fine art must create the goods they intend to sell. Farm/meat/dairy vendor applicants must produce the goods they are selling and have appropriate state seals or licenses to apply. Vendors looking to sell baked goods must have/obtain food safe certification, allergen awareness certification, and have either a commercial kitchen license or home kitchen license to apply.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers Wanted: Talk to a Townie Program

The North Adams Office of Tourism and the North Adams Chamber of Commerce are joining forces to create a new volunteer program that focuses on bringing information about the city to visitors who are in North Adams attending festivals and events. The Talk to a Townie program will enlist the help of local volunteers to attend events around the city and act as mobile information centers by having conversations with visitors and passing out information about area attractions and local businesses. The kick-off for this program is the Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA, happening June 21-23. The Talk to a Townie program is currently seeking volunteers who are passionate and knowledgeable about North Adams. Anyone interested in lending a hand should contact Veronica Bosley at:tourism@northadams-ma.gov or (413) 664-6180.

McCann Recognizes Superintendent Award Recipient

By Tammy DanielsiBerkshires Staff

Landon LeClair and Superintendent James Brosnan with Landon's parents Eric and Susan LeClair, who is a teacher at McCann.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Superintendent's Award has been presented to Landon LeClair, a senior in McCann Technical School's advanced manufacturing course.

The presentation was made last Thursday by Superintendent Jame Brosnan after Principal Justin Kratz read from teachers' letters extolling LeClair's school work, leadership and dedication.

"He's become somewhat legendary at the Fall State Leadership Conference for trying to be a leader at his dinner table, getting an entire plate of cookies for him and all his friends," read Kratz to chuckles from the School Committee. "Landon was always a dedicated student and a quiet leader who cared about mastering the content."

LeClair was also recognized for his participation on the school's golf team and for mentoring younger teammates.

"Landon jumped in tutoring the student so thoroughly that the freshman was able to demonstrate proficiency on an assessment despite the missed class time for golf matches," read Kratz.

The principal noted that the school also received feedback from LeClair's co-op employer, who rated him with all fours.

"This week, we sent Landon to our other machine shop to help load and run parts in the CNC mill," his employer wrote to the school. LeClair was so competent the supervisor advised the central shop might not get him back.
