Joe Begay (part II)

Print Story | Email Story
Joe was born and mostly lives in the Four Corners area where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah share the only such meeting of states in the U.S. He moved down to the San Xavier Rez after meeting a lady friend. However, Joe tells me that after June, when the fiery breath of the Southern Arizona Desert heats up, he shall move up to the cooler hills and canyons of the North. As an American of the Navajo Nation, he joined the Army and served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Vietnam. Later on, judging from the photos I saw, he also wore the uniform of Pancho Villa's Irregulars fighting Federales, and perhaps French Expeditionary forces, who were defeated on Cinco de Mayo. (May 5th 1862, at the Battle of Puebla) (The hostility by France, and invasion of Mexico, in order to annex it, was instigated by an incident of stolen croissants at a bakery owned by a French citizen) (Procurement of Cheap Foreign Oil was not an issue) Why was Joe dressed as a Bandito complete with bandolera in the attached photos? Joe, while watching a football game, was approached by motion picture and television scouts and offered a job as an actor. Of Course, he was told that he would have to go to acting school in order to learn how to act as an "Indian" or Mexican, or whatever. Joe has appeared in many well-known movies and TV shows. My wife recognized him instantly as an actor before I saw his scrapbook. In my next article on him, I shall list his acting coups. A fine assortment at that it was altogether. bud1956@yahoo.com
