Toasting and Tasting for Berkshire South Fundraiser

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Share a taste of community at Toasting & Tasting for Berkshire South, the Community Center's beer, wine and spirit tasting fundraiser supporting its financial assistance program. 
 
Saturday, Oct. 14, from 5-9 p.m., the event features the Michael Junkins Trio, light fare from KJ Nosh, beverages from local alcohol purveyors, a silent auction, a mystery Wine Pull, a free photo booth, and more activities.
 
"Berkshire South Regional Community Center awards nearly $125,000 annually through our financial assistance program. We live our mission that all are welcome regardless of ability to pay," said Jenise Lucey, Executive Director of BSRCC.  "This year, our financial assistance program applications have already exceeded last year's total applications. As the community need grows, so do the number of applications. No one qualified has ever been turned away."
 
Funds from Berkshire South's Financial Assistance Program go to preschoolers, students in our after-school care, aquatics, fitness and wellness class attendees, those in our adaptive needs classes, and even summer campers in need.
 
Vendors at the event will include Higher Bar, who will be onsite with their Mobile Cocktail Bar, South Egremont Spirit Shoppe, Départ Wine, Beer & Beverage, Dare Bottleshop & Provisions, Domaney's Liquors & Fine Wines, Big Elm Brewing, Les Trois Emme Winery, Barrington Brewery, and Sena Farm Brewery.
 
There will likewise be plenty of spirit-free beverages including an affogato station featuring No. 6 Depot coffee and High Lawn Farm ice cream, assorted teas from Extra Special Teas, and a Make-Your-Own Mocktail station.

Elevated Mercury Level Found in Center Pond Fish

BECKET, Mass. — The state Department of Public Health has issued an advisory after a mercury-contaminated fish was found in Center Pond. 
 
According to a letter sent to the local Board of Health from the Division of Environmental Toxicology, Hazard Assessment and Prevention, elevated levels of mercury were measured in the sample taken from the pond. 
 
The concentration in the fish exceeded DPH's action level of 0.5 milligrams per kilogram, or parts per million. 
 
"This indicates that daily consumption of fish from the waterbody may pose a health concern. Therefore, DPH has issued a FCA for Center Pond recommending that sensitive populations should not eat chain pickerel and all other people should limit consumption of chain pickerel to 2 meals/month," the letter states.
 
The letter specifically points to chain pickerel, but the 60-acre pond also has largemouth and smallmouth bass and yellow perch.
 
The "sensitive populations" include children younger than 12, those who are nursing, pregnant, or who may become pregnant.
 
The Toxicology Division recommends reducing intake of "large, predatory fish" or fish that feed on the bottoms of waterbodies, such as largemouth bass and carp. More information on safely eating fish can be found here
