College Notes: Fall 2022

Five local students were among more than 100 Western New England University students who presented their projects at the Product Innovation Showcase held in Rivers Memorial Hall on Dec. 8 on the university campus.

Four are pursuing degrees in mechanical engineering: Daniel Buell of Hancock, Kendra Castagna of Pittsfield, William Reynolds of Williamstown, and Drew Kendall of Windsor. Seyvon Kouao of Pittsfield is working toward a degree in pharmaceutical business.

The showcase was the culmination of a co-curricular course in which engineering and business students collaborated to turn ideas into marketable products.

VIP investors were given $1 million "Golden Bear Dollars," college currency, to invest and encouraged to consider the following factors; the quality of the prototype, the product's usefulness and benefits, the target market strategy, an explanation of the financial questions for production costs and revenue projections, and the professionalism of team members at the showcase.
 
Kouao's project was "HandiZip," a pair of clips that assists with aligning and using zippers, particularly for those with limited dexterity. His team was able to raise more than $4 million GBD during the showcase.
 
Kendall's project was "TC Ratchet," turn-counting ratchet which makes mechanics' jobs easier; Buell's project is was an automatic knife sharpener; Castagna's project was "Safety Shell," which reduces aspiration risks if intoxicated; Reynolds' was the IV Brush Vac for car detailing.

Cormac Duffy of Pittsfield, a Lasell University student, shared an event-marketing proposal with Red Sox Foundation executives at Fenway Park. Duffy's "Bleed Red for the Sox" focused on increasing blood donations and funding for the Red Cross.
 
Duffy and fellow students in Young-Tae Kim's sport marketing course at the Newton college embarked on the semester-long project with two aims: create a new program for the Red Sox Foundation that will raise funds and have a positive impact on local Boston communities, and generate a marketing plan to go along with it. At several points throughout the semester, foundation Director of Programs Brad Schoonmaker supported the class with feedback on their plans.
 
Schoonmaker and Kim have collaborated on this Connected Learning project since 2019, with the goal of expanding project-based learning (PBL) opportunities for students to better understand marketing through real-world, professional assignments.
 
 
Senior Gerdlie Jean Louis of Pittsfield recently performed in "The Forest Is Full of Color," a program featuring original compositions by music students at Clark University in Worcester and themed around the natural environment of Massachusetts and New England. Louis played the viola in a string quartet directed by senior Robbie Wilson. 
 
Spencer Villinski, a Lasell University student from Pittsfield, was recognized by the Newton institution for outstanding collaboration in the fall 2022 semester in his merchandise planning and control course. Villinski was selected as one of the two best people to work with in this course. Recipients of the award are selected by their peers for exemplifying superior skills in collaboration by sharing ideas and useful information, communicating in a professional manner, and cooperating in a way to ensure success.
 
 
Noah Perault of Dalton and Ashley Armstrong of Pittsfield were selected as peer advisors for the 2022-2023 term to help first-year and transfer students throughout their transition to Western New England University. Peer advisors undergo more than 150 hours of training in order to better support first-year and transfer students. 
 
Perault is pursuing a degree in business and Armstrong a degree in general business. He was also elected to serve as the College of Business representative to the Student Senate.
 
Olivia Thiemann, a junior, of West Stockbridge was a cast member in the production of "The Threepenny Opera" at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., which ran from Oct. 28 to Nov. 6 in the college's Empie Theatre and was a crew member for "Reset: New Dances," which ran Dec. 1-3 in the Baker Theatre.
 
Esther Chilson of Lanesborough participated in Emerson College's production of "The Spitfire Grill," performed Oct. 13-16 in the Robert J. Orchard Stage; "The Wolves" in September in the Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theater; and "Are You Someone To Somebody?" in December in the Green Theater. Chilson, a sophomore, is majoring in stage and production management at the Boston college.
 
Lasell University students presented original research, participated in panel discussions, and shared creative works at the Newton college's annual Career Readiness Symposium, and required incorporating National Association of Colleges and Employers competencies.
 
Mike Maruk of Pittsfield  shared updates from the student newspaper, the 1851 Chronicle. The presentation incorporated the NACE competencies of professionalism, leadership, and career & self-development. Maruk is art director of the 1851 Chronicle.
 
Spencer Villinski of Pittsfield presented updates from the student-run boutique, studio1851. The presentation incorporated the NACE competencies of equity and inclusion, professionalism, leadership, career and self-development, intercultural knowledge and perspective, and moral and ethical reasoning.
 
Victoria Tetreault of Adams, a senior majoring in interactive media and game development at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, was a member of a student team that recently completed an intense research project titled "Creating a STEM Program For the Girls Inc. Summer Camp." Undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue. 

 

Graduations

Mark Puskey of Pittsfield graduated from Ithaca (N.Y.) College in December 2022 with a bachelor of science in sports media.

Castleton (Vt.) University congratulates the graduates of the class of December 2022, including Ashlee Meczywor of Adams and Aubrey Tetlow of Williamstown.

Gabrielle Hinkley of Dalton graduated from the University of New Hampshire in Durham in December 2022 with a bachelor's degree in history.

Mass MoCA Welcomes New Tenant, Hosts Route 2 Study Reveal

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art Commission approved a new tenant Monday for the third floor of Building 1, above Bright Ideas Brewery.
 
Gianne Inc. uses recycled materials to create funcational art. 
 
"They are corporation that recycles textiles into functional handmade home art pieces such as quilts and rugs, promoting sustainability through creative design," said Jason Ahuja, senior manager of public initiatives.
 
According to Ahuja, the company is a mother and son duo who will be producing their work in the 400 square foot space.
 
Their lease will be two years long and started on Oct. 1. 
 
Director of Public Initiatives & Real Estate Morgan Everett updated the commission on an upcoming exhibition, "Race/Hustle" by Zora J Murff. The exhibit will be on view starting Dec. 6.
 
The exhibit features many different types of works "that examine physical, psychic, and political violence, the rhythms and resonances of oppression throughout history and into the present, and the harmful desires that our visual culture cultivates," according to the Mass MoCA website.
